How We Assist Seniors - Parkinson’s is a debilitating neurological disease that impacts physical and sometimes cognitive functioning. A 78 year-old gentleman diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease has been managing at home with his wife as the primary caregiver. The wife still works part time and would leave her husband at home alone for a few hours. Due to increased difficulty with his ability to walk the gentleman begins to have frequent falls at home, he requires a stand by assistance with all transfers- into and out of a bed, chair, on and off the commode, etc. This is difficult for any one person to do, the spouse quickly got worn and out and was referred to Adult Care Hunters by a friend. We assessed her husband in their home and began to talk about some assisted living options. It was apparent that 24 hour care was necessary, but too costly for in home care. Adult Care Hunters showed them three assisted living homes, they choose a home within their budget and close enough for the spouse to make daily visits. He was able to bring furniture from home. He began to participate in the sit and fit exercise classes, increased his walking with a caregiver at his side and felt relieved that he has someone available to assist him whenever needed.
